The joint UN-Arab League envoy for Syria, who made what have been described as "concrete proposals" to the country's leaders during a recent mission there, says he could receive an answer on Tuesday.

In a statement, Kofi Annan says the killing and violence in Syria must stop. He says the Syrian people have gone through a lot and deserve better.

Ahmad Fawzi is spokesperson for Mr. Annan, who is currently in Turkey:

"We await the response from President Assad which we expect today sometime and then we will know – the Special Envoy will decide how to react to those responses. He continues to consult widely with the international community. He's just returned from Ankara where he's had talks with Prime Minister Erdogan, the Foreign Minister on the situation in Syria. He briefs them on his mission so far and they told him about what they knew about the situation. He is in constant telephone contact with other players in the region and internationally."
Duration:  37″

While in Turkey Mr. Annan also met with Dr. Burhan Ghalioun of the Syrian National Council.

Mr. Annan concluded a two-day mission to Syria on Sunday.
