Top UN relief official granted permission to visit Syria

Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs

The UN humanitarian chief will visit Syria on Wednesday for a three-day mission.

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos says she will urge all parties to the conflict, to allow unhindered access for aid workers to evacuate the wounded and deliver essential supplies.

Ms. Amos has been trying to get into the country to assess the humanitarian situation, but says Syrian authorities delayed permission for her trip until now.

Eduardo del Buey is the Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General.

"Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos will visit Syria this week, arriving in Damascus on Wednesday 7 March and leaving on Friday 9 March. As requested by the Secretary-General, her aim is to urge all parties to allow unhindered access for humanitarian relief workers so that they can evacuate the wounded and deliver essential supplies."

The UN estimates that more than 7500 people have been killed since the anti-government uprising began almost a year ago.
