UN and Timor police prepare for presidential elections

The people of Timor-Leste are gearing up to vote in presidential elections this Saturday.

The United Nations mission in the country (UNMIT) has been assisting with logistics so that more than 600,000 voters can participate in the nation's third elections since becoming independent a decade ago.

Andrés del Castillo is chief technical advisor with the UN Electoral Support Team:

"It is a very important time for the Timorese authorities because this is the first time where almost all the process is conducted, organized, prepared by the national authorities. The role of the United Nations now is a backing support. We are in the back supporting very specific areas while the national authorities are mostly conducting all the electoral process."

Duration:  27″

The UN mission winds down its activities in Timor-Leste in December.
