Listen /

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Jakarta, Indonesia.

"Prevention is our stock in trade" – that's how the UN Secretary-General characterizes the work of the world body when it comes to averting crisis.

Ban Ki-moon says the UN is building up its capacities for early warning, fact-finding and peaceful settlement of disputes.

He also says it is strengthening efforts at capacity-building on human rights, humanitarian law and democratic values and practices.

The Secretary-General made the statement during an address on "The United Nations and Global Security: Collaboration and Partnership" to the Jakarta International Defense Dialogue meeting in Indonesia.

"There can be no looking away in times of crisis, hoping things will get better. Prevention means proactive early action to stop violence before it begins."

Ban Ki-moon is on a tour of Asia, making stops in four countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and his home country, South Korea.
