Security Council may take up a Syria Resolution again

Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant of the United Kingdom

The Security Council may take up a resolution on Syria again, according to the representative of the United Kingdom which takes over the presidency of the Security Council for the month of March.

Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant says the Council will hold three formal events during the month.

One will be a ministerial level meeting on change in the Middle East that several Arab officials have been invited to.

Another special event will focus on Somalia and the third will be about the continuing conflict in the Sudan.

Sir Lyall Grant also says he expects the Council to discuss Syria on more than one occasion this month.

"There is a possibility of returning to the Security Council with a draft resolution to see whether it's possible to have a resolution which is not vetoed by Russia and China as the last two resolutions were."

The UK Ambassador says the Council will also discuss Libya and Haiti, and hold a session on making the Council more focused on conflict prevention and less on simply managing crisis.
