Secretary-General welcomes progress in negotiations between Sudan and South Sudan

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Progress in negotiations between the neighbouring countries of Sudan and South Sudan is "an important step forward," says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The negotiations concern issues stemming from South Sudan's independence in July 2011.

Mr. Ban says agreement on matters such as the status of nationals and the demarcation of the common boundary "is an encouraging manifestation of both parties' spirit of cooperation and partnership."

The Secretary-General also welcomed a summit planned between the two presidents aimed at resolving other outstanding matters.

And he urged the two leaders to make the necessary compromise that will guarantee a peaceful and prosperous future for both nations.
