• The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is being commemorated all week at the UN. A special event in the General Assembly Hall on Monday included music and dance. The Day is observed on 25 March each year.

Fighting between Sudan and South Sudan causes concern

• Clashes between forces of Sudan and South Sudan on the border areas between the two countries are causing concern at the UN. There are fears that the conflict would worsen the humanitarian situation and lead to civilian casualties. The Security Council has urged the two countries to exercise restraint and to peacefully resolve their differences.

South African student says youth need to know more about UN

Model UN delegates

• An 18-year old student from South Africa says young people need to know more about the United Nations. Noxolo Ntaka participated in Model UN which simulates the Organization. She says her participation has opened her eyes about global issues and the importance of the UN.
