The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan does not want the recent events in the country to derail future plans.

Ján Kubiš says the past months have seen potentially positive developments in support of peace and reconciliation for the country. He says the absence of such commitments would mean a setback to the transition to stability in Afghanistan and in the region.

"Recent events should not eclipse or overshadow positive trends and developments they should not push the international community and Afghanistan the transition process off agreed plans and timetables. The transition so far has been on track and target the Afghan national Security Forces have proven they are up to the tasks."

Mr. Kubiš says transition encompasses accelerated Afghan leadership, responsibility and accountability in governance, rule of law, justice, development and combating corruption.
