Kofi Annan wraps up mission to Syria

Kofi Annan, joint United Nations-Arab League envoy for Syria

The "transformational winds" blowing in Syria cannot be resisted for long, according to the joint United Nations-Arab League envoy for the country.

Kofi Annan said he has urged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to heed the words of an old African proverb: "You cannot turn the wind, so turn the sail."

Mr. Annan wrapped up a two-day visit to Damascus on Sunday where he met with the president and representatives of the opposition, as well as religious leaders, youth activists, the business community and others in civil society.

The former UN Secretary-General has presented what he called "a set of concrete proposals" to the government of Bashar Al-Assad designed to help bring an end to the crisis in the country.

More than 5,000 people have killed in Syria since anti-government protests began a year ago.
