Kofi Annan says Syria crisis must not drag onListen /
The "grave and tragic situation" in Syria must not be allowed to drag on, says the joint UN-Arab League special envoy.
Kofi Annan has received a response from the Syrian authorities to his proposals for resolving the ongoing crisis there.
His spokesman Ahmad Fawzi says Mr. Annan is still seeking answers.
"He has questions about the responses and he underlined that the situation is extremely grave and everybody should know that the welfare of the Syrian people here is at stake and we can't allow this to drag on. He is seeking responses to his questions and we hope that we can move this process forward in the few hours and days to come."
Mr. Annan, a former UN Secretary-General, met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during a two-day mission which concluded on Sunday.
He has been meeting with regional actors in efforts to bring an end to the conflict in Syria.
