The joint special envoy for the UN and the Arab League has begun the first leg of his mission to negotiate a cease-fire in Syria.

Kofi Annan has arrived in Cairo, Egypt, where he is scheduled to meet with the Arab League Secretary-General on Thursday.

The former UN Chief will then travel to Damascus to hold discussions with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

Ahmad Fawzi, his spokesperson, says it is the beginning of what he described as a "very difficult" mission.

"The joint special envoy for the UN and the Arab League, Kofi Annan, has embarked on a mission to the region to help put an end to the violence that is going on in Syria and he has just started his mission in Cairo, where tomorrow morning he will be meeting with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Al-Arabi to discuss the mission. He will also be meeting with officials in Cairo, including the foreign minister."

Meanwhile, the League of Arab States has appointed a Palestinian diplomat, Nasser Al-Kidwa, as Kofi Annan's deputy for this mission.
