International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Slavery
Listen /
The fifth International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is being celebrated at the UN all week.
This year's theme honours heroes, resisters and survivors of the slave trade and those who stand up now to protect against its manifestations.
Historians estimate 28 million Africans were violently removed and cast into slavery, mainly in colonies in North America, South America and the West Indies.
