Human Rights Chief concerned with insecurity and violence in Guatemala

Listen /

Kyung- wha Kang

The UN human rights chief is concerned about widespread violence and public insecurity in Guatemala.

Navi Pillay's Country report on Guatemala shows there are more violent deaths there annually, than there were during the civil war. She says security policies need to be focused on preventive measures, including reforming and strengthening the Civilian Police and enacting effective arms control.

Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Kyung- wha Kang addressed the Human Rights Council in Geneva Wednesday about the report.

"Impunity remains widespread and urgent measures are required to curtail it including the adoption of relevant legislation on security as well as a thorough and police reform."
