Haiti needs to appoint a new Prime Minster: UN

Listen /

Mariano Fernandez

The Haitian government needs to appoint a new Prime Minister as soon as possible, according to Mariano Fernandez, the Secretary-General's Special Representative in the country.

In his briefing to the Security Council on Thursday, Fernandez said the security situation in the country runs the risk of deteriorating without political leadership.

Haiti's Prime Minister Garry Conille resigned two weeks ago, just four months after his appointment.

"His resignation was a worrying and telling sign of the nature of governability of Haiti, credibility and the strength of democratic institutions, means and ability to respond to political crises. Avoiding negative, cyclical situations, the majority of these are artificial and threaten the progress of Haiti to democracy."  Duration: 34''

Mr. Fernandez also underscored the need to reform the police.

He said that the new five-year plan jointly drafted by the Mission and the Haitian National Police would allow further training and development of the police.
