General Assembly president calls Europe's environmental experience a "great asset" for Rio+20 conference

Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser

European governments are being urged to help make the upcoming Rio+20 conference a success.

The call comes from the president of the UN General Assembly, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, in an address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, on Monday.

Mr. Al-Nasser said the sustainable development conference, to be held in Brazil this June, provides an historic opportunity for the international community to address common challenges.

Europe's experience in the environmental field can be a great asset to the Rio+20 discussions, he said.

The General Assembly president urged parliamentarians to encourage their governments to be as involved and forthcoming as possible in making the conference a success, including by supporting the participation of least developed and land-locked countries.
