Ban praises Timor-Leste for peaceful presidential election

Voters came out in large numbers to cast their ballots in the 17 March Presidential election.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is heartened that Timor-Leste's Presidential election was conducted in an atmosphere of order and calm.

He also congratulated those who voted for demonstrating their commitment to democracy and peace.

Timor-Leste is marking the 10th anniversary of its independence. The country saw a great deal of violence during the political crisis in 2006. The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste was established that year to help restore stability after the crisis caused by a mutiny in the army.
