Asia-Pacific countries are being urged to invest in their "most valuable untapped natural resource" — women and girls.

The call comes from the top UN official in the region, Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, who participated in a panel discussion on gender, development and disparities, in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday.

Dr. Heyzer says Asia is the "anchor" for global economic recovery, but women's empowerment is crucial to sustaining growth.

According to Dr. Heyzer, women's lack of participation in the labour market costs Asian countries billions of dollars each year.

She says increasing rural women's access to agricultural resources would boost food yields by roughly four per cent annually.
