Yemen elections

The Vice-President of Yemen took his oath of office as the country’s new leader after winning the elections by a landslide.

UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki-moon has welcomed the news, especially at a time when the country is facing difficult challenges.

Jocelyne Sambira reports.

Yemen's new President, Abbed Rabbo Mansour al-Hadi, was sworn in on Saturday as the country's single candidate in Tuesday's presidential election.

Warring factions in Yemen signed an agreement in November on a transitional settlement under which former president Ali Abdullah Saleh agreed to hand over power to Mr. Hadi, the then vice president.

Mr. Ban said he was committed to strengthening the UN presence and engagement in Yemen, working closely with regional and international partners to increase support.
