Yemenis go to the polls

The people of Yemen on Tuesday cast ballots for a new president after 33 years of the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The election is being held under an agreement that was reached last year after months of protests against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh in which hundreds of people died and thousands others were wounded.

According to Moustafa Ayad, a media expert with the UN Development Programme's Elections Supporting Unit in Yemen, the turn-out has been higher than expected.

"We were at a school and it's one of the main polling stations in Sana'a. It has what is known as the Voting Station A that allows voters to come from out of town and vote regardless of their districts. This morning there were lines out of the school actually."
