Players of the online game known as Freerice.com are being urged to recruit six friends to join the online fight against hunger this week.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has launching its World Freerice Week which starts on Monday under the theme "6 Degrees of Freerice".

It is based on the theory of "Six Degrees of Separation" which says that every person in the world is connected to every other person in the world through, at most, six other people.

The UN food agency says that from Monday to Saturday players of the trivia games at Freerice.com can win prizes and have fun while feeding the hungry.

WFP says that over one million registered players of Freerice have together donated nearly 100 billion grains of rice to feed almost five million people since the game's launch in 2007.
