UN temporarily relocates staff from northern Afghan office after attack

The UN is relocating international staff from its office in the northern province of Kunduz, amid growing violence across Afghanistan.

The site was attacked Saturday, reportedly by protesters angry about last week's burning of copies of the Koran by United States soldiers.

No UN staff members were hurt. However, there were casualties among the Afghan National Security Forces which responded to the incident, and among the demonstrators that had gathered outside the mission's compound.

The UN Mission in Afghanistan says the move is temporary and UNAMA will continue to deliver critical programmes in the region.

The US has apologized for the Koran burning and said it was an accident.
