Security Council Members are given a tour of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti

NARRATOR: The people of Haiti have endured so much, but we believe a better future can lie ahead, United States Ambassador Susan Rice told a press conference in Port au Prince as a UN Security Council delegation wrapped up a 4 –day visit to the country. Ambassador Rice reiterated the commitment of the Security Council and the international community to stand with the Haitian people as they confront both the challenges and opportunities of the future. "We have seen that Haiti's institutions will continue to need international support to stand on their own fully," she said.

TAPE: In Cap Hatien, we visited a tragically over crowded prison and an under-performing tribunal. Both these pillars of the rule of law in Haiti will need continued support of international partners and most importantly, the hard work of Haitians to succeed. We saw progress in building the Haitian National Police. In Merjuan, we witnessed how the draw down of MINUSTAH military forces has created new opportunities for Haitian National Police and UN Police to cooperate. Here, in Port au Prince, we saw the benefits of locating Haitian National Police and UN police in the same facility for mentoring, training and the transfer of skills. This has reinforced for us the importance and the wisdom of further reforming and strengthening the Haitian National Police until the task of standing up a professional and capable police force is finished.

NARRATOR: Ambassador Rice said Haiti's security is tied very closely to a more prosperous future for the Haitian people.
