UN in Afghanistan deplores Kunduz attack

Afghanistan

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has deplored an attack on its compound in the north-eastern city of Kunduz.

No casualties have been recorded and all UN staff members have been accounted for, according to the mission.

Media reports state that the violence in Kunduz was related to protests over the reported unintentional burning of copies of the Qur’an by United States soldiers in Afghanistan.

Four people reportedly died and dozens were injured in Kunduz.

UNAMA reaffirms its deep respect for Islam and understanding for the feelings of Muslims at the desecration of the Holy Qur'an.

Meanwhile, the mission urges people who wish to express their legitimate religious sentiments to reject calls to engage in violence, and exercise restraint.
