Secretary General visits the Khan Younis school of "hope" for girls in the southern Gaza Strip

Calls for Israel to lift the blockade on Gaza have been repeated as the United Nations Secretary-General visited the territory on Thursday.

Ban Ki-moon is in the Middle East as part of his efforts to push forward Israeli Palestinian peace talks.

Mr. Ban went to Gaza where he visited a girls' school built by the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

His Deputy Spokesman, Eduardo Del Buey, says the Secretary-General also met a group of Gazans who called for the blockage to be lifted.

"What they requested was something they have been requesting for many years, and that is the lifting of the blockade. As you know, when the Secretary-General visited three years ago he spoke with the Israelis about the devastating effects that the blockade was having especially for UNRWA in terms of reconstruction and development in Gaza and we visited a housing project today where UNRWA is constructing houses built with those materials."
