Togo says it will use its month as president of the UN Security Council to focus on securing peace in Syria and in Africa.

The West African country takes over the presidency on Wednesday and is faced with chairing discussions over the Arab state.

The United Nations estimates more than 5000 people have been killed in the 10-month long popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

Kodjo Menan, the Togolese Ambassador to the UN, says his country will play an important role.

"Indeed, it's a big responsibility for Togo to have to deal with that question. The Council started dealing with the question for a long time. Our wish is to see how we can work within the Council to bring a very concrete and positive solution to the situation on the ground."
