Senegal awaits provisional vote results

Senegal election

Tensions remain high after Senegal held its first round of presidential elections on Sunday.

Mr. Ban Ki-moon, who is in Africa for a round of work visits, voiced hope that the polls would be peaceful, transparent and respectful of the will of the people.

The campaign period for the election has been marred by violent demonstrations in the capital, Dakar, and other cities.

Protesters are reportedly angry about the decision of incumbent President Abdoulaye Wade to seek a third term in office.

Media reports say that provisional results for the first round of presidential elections will be released by Senegal's electoral commission on 2 March.
