Security remains serious challenge in eastern DR Congo

• Armed groups continue to pose a threat to security in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The UN Mission in the country (MONUSCO) says the situation is compounded by the Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army rebels. At the same time, the country is grappling with the dispute over last year's presidential and parliamentary elections.

American soldiers join UN mission in South Sudan

U.S. soldiers in South Sudan

• American troops have joined the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) which is helping the new African nation stand on its feet. The United States government has deployed five military personnel to UNMISS. The first three of the troops arrived on 14 January.

Reporters work under death threats in Somalia

• Somalia is one of the most dangerous places to work as a journalist. It's estimated that at least 37 journalists have been killed in the line of duty in the country since 1992. The latest victim was Hassan Osman Abdi whose murder on 28 January has been condemned by UNESCO and the top United Nations envoy in Somalia.
