Security Council votes to increase AU troops in SomaliaListen /
• The number of African Union troops serving in Somalia will be increased from 12,000 to over 17,000. The Security Council on Wednesday unanimously voted to raise the troop strength. The resolution was submitted by the United Kingdom which views the troop increase as a boost to the AU mission in the country.
African Diaspora seek to strengthen ties with Africans
• Preparations are underway for a first ever summit of Africans and the African Diaspora. As part of these efforts, lawmakers and experts from Africa and the Diaspora gathered in New York recently. One participant from Poland says the African Diaspora can help in the development of Africa.
South Sudan gets help from Japan to rebuild
• 120 Japanese engineers joined the UN mission in South Sudan this week to help the new country build roads and bridges. Infrastructural development is a top priority for South Sudan. The engineers from the Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force is the ninth team from the country to participate in UN peacekeeping operations.
