Listen /

Gennady Gatilov

Russia says it will not support attempts to transform the Human Rights Council into a tool of political pressure. The statement came during an urgent debate on Syria.

Russia's Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Gennady Gatilov said that it was imperative existing problems be resolved by countries themselves, without coercion and external interference.

He added Russia had resolutely opposed any violence against civilian populations but had also opposed the use of armed intervention from abroad in support of one side of an internal conflict.

"We can not support attempt to transform the council into a tool of political pressure and to divide states into good and bad states or students and teachers nor to dilute the intergovernmental nature of the main UN Human Rights body."

During Tuesdays Human Rights Council debate Syria walked out saying it did not recognize the legitimacy of the session.
