Russia, China vote against a UN resolution on Syria

Russia and China have both vetoed a resolution on Syria during a UN Security Council vote on Saturday, against 13 in favour.

The resolution condemned the widespread and gross human rights violations by the Syrian authorities.

It also demanded that all parties in Syria, including armed groups, cease all violence or reprisals.

The double veto outraged several of the member states, including Susan Rice, the US Ambassador to the UN:

"For months this Council has been held hostage by a couple of members. These members stand behind empty arguments and individual interests while delaying and seeking to strip bare any text that would pressure Assad to change his actions. This intransigence is even more shameful when you consider that at least one of these members continues to deliver weapons to Assad."

Rice says 3,000 more civilians have been killed since Russia and China last vetoed a resolution on Syria in October.
