The Syrian government is being accused of deliberately launching a  brutal assault of the city of Homs in an effort to crush dissent.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay says failure of the Security Council to reach a consensus on the Syrian crisis appears to have fueled the government's readiness to massacre its own people.

Ms Pillay deplored the assault on the city of Homs and called on the international community to ‘cut through the politics’ and take effective action to protect the Syrian population.

Rupert Colville is the spokesperson for the UN Human Rights office.

"It's hard to confirm each and every incident or report out of Homs, but I think the big picture is clear, arts of the city have been cut off sometimes for weeks on end, and it's under attack, and under attack from very heavy weaponry including artillery, possibly helicopters, motors, rockets. I think it's clear a big assault is going on in Homs where the government appears ready to crush any kind of opposition it comes across including shelling indiscriminately into civilian areas."
