Israel urged again to release Palestinian prisoner on hunger strike

Listen /

Khader Adnan

Authorities in Israel have been urged again to release Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan, who is now on his 66th day of a hunger strike.

The appeal has come from the United Nations independent expert on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Richard Falk, who was in the region on a 10-day visit.

Charles Appel reports.

Khader Adnan has been refusing food for more than two months in protest to his imprisonment without charge by Israel.

The UN independent expert on the human rights situation in the Palestinian territories, Richard Falk, says Khader Adnan is in jeopardy of dying any time.

Mr. Falk appealed to the Israeli authorities to urgently release Mr. Adnan.

He also called for a prompt independent and impartial investigation of allegations of torture and other mistreatment of the Palestinian prisoner.

Mr. Falk described Mr. Adnan's case as "emblematic of the Israeli practice of detaining Palestinians without charges."
