Israel can positively contribute to changes towards "a free, democratic and prosperous Middle East" according to the United Nations Secretary-General.

Ban Ki-moon was speaking in Jerusalem where he met with Israeli President Shimon Peres in an effort to restart the Israeli-Palestinian talks.

The Secretary-General said Israel's cooperation is vital in creating what he called "a positive dynamic."

"This is a critical moment for Israel and the region. I am encouraged that Israelis and Palestinians have re-engaged in direct dialogues in the framework of the Middle East Quartet and under Jordanian auspices. I hope these talks can be sustained."

Mr. Ban added that Israel can improve its strategic relations with its neighbours, including by constructively engaging in the peace process with the Palestinians.
