General Assembly meets to discuss Syria as death toll rises

General Assembly

The UN General Assembly is set to meet to discuss recent developments in Syria, as the crackdown on pro-democracy protesters continues.

Last week Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the UN was considering sending a joint observer mission with the League of Arab States in a bid to resolve the crisis engulfing the country.

The meeting will start with a briefing by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay.

The 193-member Assembly will then discuss a report of the UN Human Rights Council from December last year which strong condemns abuses by the Syrian authorities.

More than 5,000 people have been killed since the uprising.

The UN has urged the Government to stop the violence and hold dialogue with opposition groups
