Kofi Annan, Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States on the Syrian crisis

Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has accepted to serve as Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States on the Syrian crisis.

Mr. Annan's appointment was announced late on Thursday by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Nabil ElAraby.

As the Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States, Kofi Annan will meet with all the stakeholders within and outside Syria in order to end the violence and the humanitarian crisis.

He is also expected to facilitate what has been described as "a peaceful Syrian-led and inclusive political solution that meets the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people.”

Mr. Annan said he looks forward to the full co-operation of all relevant parties and stakeholders to help bring an end to the violence and human rights abuses and promote a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis.
