An escalation of violence in Syria following the failure of the UN Security Council to pass a resolution is hurting innocent people according to the Moroccan Ambassador to the United Nations, Mohammed Loulichki.

A draft resolution tabled by Morocco to end ten months of violence between the government and the opposition failed to pass in the Council on Saturday.

The UN estimates that around 5000 people have died in the violence.

Ambassador Loulichki says his worst fears have come true following the failure of the Security Council to act.

"Unfortunately, what we are experiencing is an escalation, the victims of which are just innocent persons. Honestly, very decent people who do not have any stake in this opposition between the government and the opposition."

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General says he is appalled by the escalating violence in Syria and mounting death toll.

The continuous onslaught against the city of Homs is unacceptable and erodes the legitimacy of the government, he adds.

Mr. Ban called on the Syrian authorities to stop using force against civilians.
