An appeal has been made to the Chinese authorities not to deport a group of 25 North Koreans who have been arrested in the country.

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) says the people should be allowed to have access to proper procedures so that their claims to asylum can be heard.

UNHCR spokesman, Adrian Edwards, says the agency is closely following the situation of the detained North Koreans.

"We have not had access to this group and learned about them about a week ago from South Korean media. We are in communication with the Chinese authorities and we have called on the Chinese government to uphold the non-refoulement principle. UNHCR is encouraging all parties concerned to find and work towards a viable humanitarian solution in the best interest of these individuals and to ensure their safety."
