Child-soldier demobilization

• Thousands of child soldiers were demobilized in parts of Central Africa last year, according to UNICEF. However, the agency is warning that instability and conflict in West and Central Africa increase the chances of children being recruited as child-soldiers. The International Day against the use of child soldiers was observed on 12 February to highlight the issue.

Up to 14 million people at risk of starvation in Sahel

Drought-stricken land

• Up to 14 million people risk starvation in the Sahel region, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Nine countries face drought and food shortages in the semi-arid region. IFRC warns that if urgent action is not taken that number could increase to 23 million people.

Plant a tree and save a bee

• ‘Plant a tree and save a bee', that's the motto of the Apiculture and Nature Conservation Organization of Cameroon (ANCO). It has planted 685,000 trees. Its Director Paul Mzeka, who has been recognized as a UN Forest Hero, says ANCO plans to plant one million trees in two or three years.
