The UN Secretary-General is calling on Timor-Leste to insure its upcoming Presidential election is credible, transparent and peaceful.

Ban Ki-moon says this is critical to the ongoing peace and progress in the country.

Timor-Leste saw a great deal of violence during the political crisis in 2006. The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste was established that year to help restore stability after the crisis caused by a mutiny in the army.

Mr. Ban says the upcoming Presidential election is a milestone in the country's consolidation of democracy.

"Stability and democracy can never be taken for granted. They must be nurtured and protected. That is why I call on all citizens to ensure that the election is credible, transparent and peaceful. This is critical to deepening peace and progress in Timor-Leste”.
