Attack on journalists in Syria condemned

The shelling of a media centre in the city Homs by the Syrian army on Wednesday has been condemned by the head of the United Nations cultural agency (UNESCO).

American war reporters, Marie Colvin and French photojournalist Rémi Ochlik were killed in the attack which injured several other journalists.

UNESCO Director General, Irina Bokova, urged Syrian authorities to respect the civilian status of reporters and to protect them.

She said attacks on journalists contravene the Geneva Convention, which Syria has ratified and a UN Security Council resolution on the protection of journalists in armed conflict.

According to UNESCO, six journalists have been killed in Syria since the start of protests against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad last year.
