Economic and Social Council meeting

Advancing youth employment is one of the main priorities for the UN Economic and Social Council in 2012.

That's according to Hanif Navid, Director with the Office for ECOSOC Support and Coordination.

ECOSOC is starting a four day meeting on Tuesday to discuss the current global economic and financial situation.

Mr Navid says creating green jobs that are sustainable is one of the ways that the organization wants to lower unemployment rates.

"In the last 15 years we have achieved very impressive levels of growth, but that was not inclusive. We had growth, but inequality also increased. So that is a priority for ECOSOC this year as well. Second angle that also is relevant to unemployment rising levels. And that is the issue that everyone now sees in the headlines. And that is the issue of sustainability. It's about green economy and green jobs."

ECOSOC is seeking to strengthen its partnerships with governments, the private sector and philanthropic community to create decent jobs for the youth.
