Birth control pills and injectable contraceptives
Contraceptives have really empowered women, giving them the freedom to choose if and when to get pregnant. To ensure that methods like birth control pills, implants or injectable contraceptives are being used safely, many countries follow WHO’s birth control guide. But a recent study by a leading medical journal, The Lancet, now suggests that hormonal contraceptives, particularly injectables, may double the risk of uninfected women acquiring HIV.
ILO: More women doing menial work in Africa

As the world struggles to ward off a deeper job crisis, most countries in Africa are still hiring, says the UN’s labour organization, ILO. But there is a lack of descent jobs. The region has the highest rate of “working poor”. Many of the jobs are in agriculture, where the majority of farmers or labourers are women. Meanwhile, women in North Africa, where there is a severe shortage of jobs are suffering the most.
Egyptian women demand reforms at first protest anniversary

Marking the first anniversary of the uprising which toppled former President, Hosni Mubarak, Egytian women gathered in Tahrir Square to demand their rights. Joining the youth, the women also called for more political reforms. They also demanded the right to participate in government. Khawla Mattar, the head of the UN’s information centre in Cairo spoke to Daniel Dickinson about what Egyptian women want from their new leaders.
