WFP to scale up food distribution in crisis-torn Yemen

Preparations are under way to feed 3.5 million vulnerable people in Yemen in 2012.

The World Food Organization (WFP) is scaling up its assistance to respond to the growing needs in a country caught in the midst of a full-fledged humanitarian crisis.

Food and fuel prices are soaring and there's been a breakdown in social services due to civil unrest in Yemen.

WFP is especially prioritizing 1.8 million severely food insecure Yemenis living in the poorest 14 governorates, including 635,000 women and children under the age of five.

The estimated total cost of this food assistance is $207 million.

Germany has already contributed US $31 million.
