US citizen tapped to head world's leading food agency

Ertharin Cousin

A Chicago native has been appointed to head the World Food Programme for the next five years.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban-Ki moon and José Graziano da Silva the Food and Agriculture Organization made the announcement on Tuesday.

As the former US representative to FAO, Ertharin Cousin has been a tireless advocate for world's poorest.

With 25 years experience in both the public and private food sector, she is widely known for leading Feeding America's response to Hurricane Katrina.

At the time, 62 million pounds of food were distributed to the needy across the US Gulf Coast.
