Stronger refugee involvement at Dadaab camp in Kenya
Refugees at the world’s largest refugee camp in Kenya have been asked to take a bigger role in its day-to-day running.
The move is part of a strategy by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) to maintain operations at Dadaab where insecurity and reduced access are challenges.
UNHCR says while refugees have always played a role in making camps work, this has been expanded.
Refugees there are working in hospitals and schools. They are also building new latrines and ensuring water delivery, among other tasks.
More than 460,000 people live at the Dadaab refugee complex, one-third of whom arrived last year alone from Somalia.
