South Africa to stress regional cooperation in Security Council

• South Africa is emphasizing the importance of closer cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations to solve global problems. Ambassador Baso Sangqu has described 2011 as an "extremely dramatic" year. South Africa has assumed the rotating presidency of the Security Council for January.

• A life-saving vaccine against pneumonia is being made available to every child across Ethiopia. Pneumonia is a major cause of death amongst the under-fives in the Horn of Africa country. The United Nations has now launched an awareness programme so that parents know the vaccine is available.

Humanitarian support for ransacked South Sudan towns

• The humanitarian aid effort has been stepped up in the towns of Pibor and Lukuangole which have been attacked by a group of 6,000 Lou Nour armed youth in South Sudan. They targeted members of the rival Murle ethnic community. The attackers have withdrawn but have left what has been described as a grim humanitarian situation.
