Piracy off the coast of Somalia can be eradicated according to the new Secretary-General of the UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Around 200 seafarers are still being held hostage by Somali pirates on eleven ships off the coast of Somalia.

But the number of successful attacks has dropped.

IMO chief, Koji Sekimizu, says the pirates can be defeated.

"We have seen good signs of the reduction in incidents. With the effort of the United Nations, I'm sure we can eradicate this menace of piracy off the coast of Somalia."
