A settlement to decide the future of Western Sahara is being urged by a senior United Nations envoy, who is warning the region risks the possibility of renewed military hostilities.

Morocco and the Polisario Front have been in conflict over the future of Western Sahara since 1976 after the Spanish colonial administration withdrew.

The Polisario Front says the territory's final status should be decided in a referendum that includes independence as an option.

Morocco, however is pushing for autonomy for the Saharawis but within Morocco.

Daniel Dickinson asked Christopher Ross, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara about the current state of negotiations.
