Malnutrition levels are on the increase in two troubled Sudanese states according to the United Nations humanitarian chief.

The humanitarian situation in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile, has worsened following ethnic fighting and the disruption of the planting of crops in 2011.

Poor rainfall and the shortage of food stocks have led to a doubling of food prices.

In a statement following a meeting with the Sudanese authorities in the capital, Khartoum, the UN humanitarian chief, Valerie Amos, said a "long-term political solution" to the crisis had to be found.
