Myanmar urged to free all political prisoners before elections

Myanmar is being urged to release all remaining political prisoners after a significant number of them were granted amnesty last week.

Among those freed were prominent opposition figures and individuals.

Derrick Mbatha reports.

Tomás Ojea Quintana, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, is calling on the Myanmar government to release all remaining political prisoners without any conditions.

Myanmar's President Thein Sein recently granted another amnesty in which he released a significant number of prisoners of conscience.

Quintana welcomed the move, calling it an "important and necessary development" to advance national reconciliation and deepen Myanmar's transition to democracy.

The UN rights expert is also asking for unimpeded access for the UN to help address human rights issues in the country.
